18/03/2019
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein of the body. If the clot moves it becomes an embolism and can cause serious consequences if it travels to a major organ of the body.
DVT can occur at any age but there are certain factors that may increase your risk:
DVT is more common in people over 60
Sedentary lifestyle – sitting or bed rest for long periods of time can put you at risk of DVT
Long journey
Obesity (BMI >30)
Pregnancy
Oral contraceptive pill and HRT
Dehydration
Smoking – Smoking narrows your blood vessels and increases blood pressure increasing your risk of DVT
