Should I exercise with osteoarthritis?
Yes, exercise is good for you if you have osteoarthritis (OA). If you haven’t been doing exercise then start gradually and build-up. It may make your joint ache initially but it will become less sensitive as you keep exercising. A good exercise programme will include things that make you stretch, balance and strengthen as well as other activities that increase your heart rate.
The worldwide model for helping people with OA of the hip and knee is an evidence based programme of exercise and education. In the UK this programme is called Escape Pain, around the world there is a programme called GLAD – introduced in Denmark, now used in many other countries including Australia and Canada. This programme is being increasingly offered around the UK and is part of the governments plans for improving the nations health. If you want to know more, please get in touch.
