Upper back pain is common affecting 15-20% of people during their lifetime. There is lots of research and articles about low back pain but there tends to be less information about other back pain. The thoracic region is from your neck to your low back. The most common pain in this region is across the shoulders and between the shoulder blades. Each of the vertebra of the spine have ribs attached to them so thoracic pain may radiate along the rib muscles or nerves to the front. Thoracic pain can be quite a deep, intense pain, probably because of the involvement of the ribs.

You may have pain from a lifting injury or trauma or spending long periods in the same posture. Sometimes it occurs from strains from unaccustomed activity such as hedge cutting or decorating. You may have pain for no obvious reason. As always, pain may be related to your stress levels, mood, physical wellness, mental health, tiredness, and general wellbeing. It is common to hold tension in the shoulders and upper back.

There are a number of activities that may help pain in the thoracic region. Moving regularly, especially changing posture. Exercise – any exercise can be helpful as long as you do it regularly. I’ll share some home exercises on Friday on the facebook page. Pacing yourself with unaccustomed activities by varying the positions you are in and taking breaks. You may benefit from considering your stress levels and identifying how you can reduce your stress or improve your resilience. Hands-on treatment can relax muscle tension and relieve pain.

Pain in this region can occasionally be due to more serious causes. You should seek advice if you had a fall or trauma, have pain that disturbs your sleep, your pain is constant or getting worse or you have other symptoms such as a cough, weight loss or fever. If you have any concerns seek advice from a health practitioner.
