How do if I have a nerve problem?

If a nerve is involved in your pain problem you will have tingling, numbness or weakness in the area affected. For low back pain the symptoms will be in your legs or feet and for neck pain the symptoms are in your arms or hands. There may be burning or sharp, stabbing pains radiating into your arms or legs with certain movements.

What is a trapped nerve?

A ‘trapped nerve’ is not really a very helpful term. Your nerve doesn’t get trapped so it has to be released although it may feel like this. In medical terms a nerve is described as compressed or impingement – which as is sounds like, means pinched. It can be caused by tension in muscles or swelling around part of the nerve. Pressure on the nerve stimulates it so that there are a lot of messages from the area.

Will it get better?

Nerve pain can be particularly unpleasant but most people usually make a complete recovery. Many people will find their nerve pain recovers gradually on its own. Pain killers, particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or neurofen may help. Some people seek help from a healthcare practitioner when they are concerned about the symptoms, slow to improve or the symptoms are having a large impact on their every-day life. Exercises for nerve pain usually involve repetitions rather than prolonged stretching. Videos of sciatic nerve stretch.

How can osteopathy help?

Osteopathy helps by identifying how the nerve is affected – which areas of sensation are affected and where there is any weakness. This can help to identify the areas where the nerve may be being pinched. Treatment helps by reducing the tension in the muscles with massage and stimulating around the nerve to reduce sensitivity in the nerve. You will also be given exercises to help reduce the tension or swelling around the area where the nerve may be compressed.

I frequently treat people with nerve pain from their neck or back. In my experience nerve pain usually recovers gradually. It is not a switch that can be turned on or off. Once the pressure is relieved the nerve seems to gradually recover. The analogy I often use is like a memory foam mattress gradually expands after a person gets up.
