As you age your spine will show signs of arthritis – the bones change shape slightly with additional spurs growing from them. The discs in your spine, which are the cushioning between each of the vertebral bones of the spine, dehydrate and lose their height as you get older. When discs start to lose their height they may be called degenerative.

Symptoms of arthritis

You may have lower back pain that is particularly bad in the morning. You get up feeling stiff but once you get moving the pain goes off within about 30 minutes.

You are getting older inside too

Arthritic changes are sometimes called ‘wear and tear’. Signs of arthritis are a normal part of aging – just like wrinkles and grey hair and people will have changes in varying degrees just like wrinkles and grey hair.

Just because you have arthritis doesn’t mean you will have pain.

Normal changes

""

You will see it is often more unusual not to have signs of degenerative changes in your spine. If you have had a scan and been told that you have degeneration in your spine or a disc bulge, it is most likely that it is simply normal for your age.

Helping yourself

It is really important that you keep exercising regularly. Any exercise is fine as long as you are active and enjoying it. It is recommended that all adults, no matter what your age, do strengthening exercises twice per week.

If you don’t feel able to exercise at the moment you may wish to seek advice and support from an osteopath or physiotherapist. They will assess your back and support you through a personalised exercise program.
