Why do I feel stressed when I am in pain?

Stress and pain often occur together. Stress can precipitate pain episodes. Pain episodes can lead to stress due to the disruption of daily living. Chronic or persistent pain can cause a stress overload which can lead to depression, substance abuse and weight gain.
It is complex how and why stress and pain are related. It may even go back to childhood events and pain experiences. Ongoing pain can cause changes in the brain which can stimulate a stress response in the body.
